More About Websites—3 Main Business Models

Websites can be categorized into three main purposes. Knowing them will help you to design a hybrid site that quickly produces what you need in your business and have major long-term results. This mini-guide explains them in easy-to-understand terms.

There's so much to learn about promotion and marketing: social media, websites, conversions, Facebook advertising, LinkedIn marketing ... and countless other activities that each add to greater and greater success, IF you use them properly.

Not understanding any one of them can send you down a rabbit hole. For instance, attempting to use social media to get the word out about your book can become very time consuming with little to no results.

Another example is not having a deep enough understanding of websites in their potentials and uses and therefore just copying what everybody else does ... which is as wrong as you can get when it comes to getting new business.

We need to take things in stride, and I am taking all sorts of precautions to keep overwhelm out of the picture for you. Also, I'm seeking to bring you along a path that gives the most return on your efforts within the least amount of time.

This doesn't mean you're going to get "fast and easy" results. As you may know about me, I don't like it when marketers claim that things very complex and challenging are "oh so easy". It is misleading to say such nonsense.

I'd like to go a little deeper into websites in this mini-guide. "Three Main Types of Websites" is an excellent mini-guide. Still, there are more fundamentals about websites that I feel will be very advantageous to know.

No doubt, the more you know about the underlying facts of something, the more brilliant you can be with it moving forward. Understand that although things have to be grouped and categorized for simplicity's sake, you have limitless options to build a website for yourself.

I am promoting that you start with a landing page, and then you can begin to build a hybrid site over time that does exactly what it needs to. That could be more landing pages with different messages for other audiences, different offers, products and services, etc. And you can also combine some of the features of the three main groups of websites, which I explain further below.

So, take what I teach in the previous article on websites, and combine your knowledge with the following for a broader understanding of websites and their capabilities.

Based on your specific business, you can be strategic with your Web Designer by letting her/him know what your long-term plans are. Having this kind of foresight is very important because if the wrong template or initial design of your website isn't made for future growth plans, it could be costly to have to rebuild from square one.

As a side note, you may end up having a lot of lead generation-type websites that are mini-sites and also have one of the other types, like E-commerce, Publishing, or a combination thereof.

We will get into more about landing pages and lead gen in future mini-guides here on Author Utopia. For now, here is more on websites you should know...

Websites can also be categorized into three main purposes:

🔷Lead Generation (Lead Gen)

Let's cover the Lead Gen website first because this one contains landing pages like the kind I want you to start with.

Don't think for a second that this is some basic thing that you will only use in the beginning. It is probably the most important type of webpage and website you can ever create. And this is something you will likely never stop doing as far as websites are concerned!

Lead Generation Websites

Lead generation is an essential component for growth and success. Lead generation websites are an integral part of getting leads and building a list of people who are interested in what you have to offer.

They enable you to attract potential customers, gather valuable information on them, and convert them into qualified leads. I will post a mini-guide soon about qualified leads. Believe me, understanding this can save you hardship, frustration, and burnout from being overwhelmed by people who are NOT qualified!

Understanding Lead Generation Websites

Lead generation websites are online platforms specifically designed to capture visitor information, primarily in the form of contact details such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers. These websites serve as a crucial touchpoint where you can initiate interactions with potential customers, nurture relationships, and guide them through the sales funnel.

Lead generation websites typically possess several key features and functionalities to optimize the process of capturing leads. Let's explore some common elements found on these websites:

Lead Capture Forms: At the heart of a lead generation website lies a lead capture form strategically placed to encourage visitors to share their information. These forms are usually concise and user-friendly, minimizing friction and maximizing conversions.

Compelling Offers and Incentives: To entice visitors into sharing their contact details, lead generation websites often present attractive offers or incentives. These can include free e-books, white papers, discounts, access to exclusive content, or product demos that align with the target audience's interests and needs.

Landing Pages: Lead generation websites employ dedicated landing pages that focus on a specific offer or campaign. These pages are designed to drive visitors' attention to the offer and encourage them to take the desired action, which is typically filling out the lead capture form.

This is specifically what I recommend you start with—your first landing page—and then another and another ... once you get the first one working.

This will be the beginning of a larger lead generation website you will eventually construct—or possibly a different kind of site—but the point is to get you going as quickly as possible with capturing leads and building a list of prospective buyers! This is done with landing pages.

Clear Call-to-Action (CTA): Effective lead generation websites employ prominent and persuasive CTAs that guide visitors towards the desired action. The CTA typically prompts visitors to complete the lead capture form, encouraging them to subscribe, request a consultation, or take another relevant action.

Lead Management Systems: To effectively manage the captured leads, lead generation websites integrate with lead management systems or customer relationship management (CRM) software. These systems help businesses organize and track leads, segment them based on criteria like demographics or interests, and facilitate personalized communication.

Benefits of Lead Generation Websites

Lead generation websites, specifically landing pages, allow you to build and expand your customer base and boost conversions. Some key advantages include:

Targeted Audience Acquisition: Lead generation websites allow businesses to attract and engage with a highly targeted audience. By aligning offers and incentives with the specific interests and pain points of the target market, businesses can attract leads who are more likely to convert into paying customers.

Data Collection and Analysis: Through lead generation websites, businesses gather valuable customer data, enabling them to gain insights into their audience's preferences, behaviors, and needs. This data can inform marketing strategies, product development, and overall business decision-making.

Enhanced Conversion Rates: Lead generation websites streamline the lead acquisition process by capturing visitor information and nurturing relationships with potential customers. By nurturing leads through targeted follow-up communication, businesses can increase the likelihood of conversion and boost overall conversion rates.

Cost-Effective Marketing: Compared to traditional marketing methods, lead generation websites offer a cost-effective approach to customer acquisition. By targeting specific audiences and optimizing conversion strategies, you can maximize their marketing budget and achieve higher returns on investment.

E-Commerce Websites

E-commerce, short for electronic commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods and services conducted over the internet. E-commerce websites are the virtual marketplaces that facilitate these transactions, providing online platforms where businesses can showcase their products, and consumers can browse, compare, and purchase items with just a few clicks.

E-commerce sites range from small online stores run by individual entrepreneurs to large-scale platforms hosting thousands of sellers. The primary purpose of e-commerce websites is to enable online sales transactions, usually offering a multitude of products.

They have capabilities such as a product catalog, shopping cart, secure payment gateway and more.

Publishing Websites

A publishing website, also known as a content publishing website, is an online platform designed to create, manage and distribute various forms of content to a wide audience. It serves as a virtual hub where individuals, businesses, organizations or media outlets can share information, stories, news, articles, blogs, multimedia content, and other creative works with the public.

The primary purpose of a publishing website is to disseminate content and engage with readers, viewers, subscribers, or users. Publishing websites can cover a broad range of subjects and cater to diverse interests such as news, entertainment, education, lifestyle, technology, fashion, travel, or any niche topic.

More realistically for an author, solo-preneur or small business, this kind of website would only contain content specifically within the scope of your genre, topic or products/services.

Publishing websites often integrate social media sharing buttons or widgets, enabling users to share content across popular social platforms. This enhances the reach and visibility of published content and encourages user engagement through likes, comments, and shares.

Many publishing websites offer subscription options, allowing users to receive notifications or updates whenever new content is published. This keeps the audience informed and helps build a loyal readership base.

Benefits of Publishing Websites

Publishing websites offer several benefits for content creators, businesses, and readers alike. Here are some advantages:

Publishing websites allow you to reach a wide audience beyond geographical boundaries. It enables you to share your ideas, expertise or stories with people worldwide, fostering a sense of connection.

Thought Leadership and Branding: Publishing websites allow individuals or businesses to establish themselves as thought leaders and industry experts by consistently creating and sharing valuable content. This builds credibility, enhances brand reputation, and attracts a loyal audience.

This is extremely valuable, but understand that it is a long-term tactic. Not unlike bamboo that takes seven years to sprout and then begins to grow about one foot per day, a publishing website pays off big time down the road.

Monetization Opportunities: Publishing websites can serve as revenue streams through various monetization methods. This includes display advertising, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, or selling digital products such as e-books or courses.

Again, this is taking different qualities and capabilities and combining them into what supports your needs and goals.

There are, of course, many different nuances of websites, but most will fall within one of these three types. Take my company's website: for instance. It is a hybrid of a publishing and authority website.

That's the beauty of strategizing and planning; you're able to first decide what your short and long-term goals are and then create the type of websites that work best for you!

To Your Success!
